Summer in the garden is glorious – but too much sun can make it a challenge to enjoy your outdoor space fully. From sun-soaked patios and courtyards to sweeping green lawns, adding shade doesn’t have to mean building permanent structures. One of the most natural and beautiful ways to introduce cover is by planting trees in stunning, large terracotta pots.

Why potted trees are ideal for summer shade

Potted trees offer a smart solution for creating shade exactly where it’s needed. Unlike fixed pergolas or awnings, large planted containers can be positioned around seating areas, terraces or paths to provide natural cover that moves with the light. This flexibility is also useful in smaller gardens or rented spaces where permanent features might not be an option.

As well as function, trees in pots add plenty of height, texture and visual interest. Their leaves catch the breeze, cast soft dappled shadows, and help create that cool, enclosed feeling that’s so welcome on warmer days.

The best trees to plant in large pots

Choosing the right tree is important. Look for species that grow steadily, develop a neat canopy, and can adapt to being planted in a container. Olive trees are a popular choice for their silvery foliage and Mediterranean charm. A well-shaped bay tree offers dense shade, year-round greenery, and a classic look that suits most garden styles.

Japanese maples, with finely cut leaves and a gentle shape, are another excellent option for adding colour and light coverage. If your garden gets plenty of sun, citrus trees like lemon or orange can thrive in large terracotta pots and bring both shade and fragrance. Whichever tree you choose, it's worth checking how much water and protection it needs through the seasons.

Choosing the right large terracotta pot

For a tree to grow well in a pot, the container must be large enough to accommodate the roots and stable enough to stay upright in the wind. Our hand-thrown Galestro clay pots are ideal for the job. As well as their eye-catching aesthetic qualities, they’re also heavy, durable, and frost-resistant – all essential features when planting something as permanent as a tree.

The Trombo is a firm favourite with professional landscapers for tree planting. Its wide base offers excellent stability, and the subtle flared design looks smart in almost any setting. For something more formal or architectural, the Cubo Grande is an excellent choice. Its solid square form is perfect for framing entrances, defining spaces, or creating a living hedge when grouped with multiple box or bay trees.

How to care for a potted tree

A well-planted tree will need a mix of good drainage, regular watering and a little seasonal care. Place a layer of crocks or grit at the base of your pot to help with drainage, then use a loam-based compost mixed with slow-release fertiliser. Trees in pots need more frequent watering than those in the ground – especially during warm, dry weather – so check soil moisture regularly and water deeply.

In winter, most trees benefit from a little protection. Our Galestro clay pots hold up well against frost, but it's still wise to raise them slightly off the ground using terracotta feet to prevent waterlogging at the base. Pruning and feeding in spring will help keep shape and encourage healthy growth for the months ahead.

Make shade a focal point

A shaded spot doesn’t have to feel dark or heavy. Use your potted tree as a central feature, then build around it with flowering underplanting in complementary terracotta containers. A lemon tree in a Vaso Imprunetino surrounded by low pots filled with trailing rosemary or bright geraniums can bring a vibrant Mediterranean feel to any garden corner.

You might also place your tree container beside a bench or garden table to create an instant retreat. When the pot itself is as beautiful as the tree it holds, the effect is naturally elegant – no need for elaborate hard landscaping.
